Balasore:

Authorities are sounding the alarm as the Subarnarekha river in Balasore district has risen beyond safe levels, prompting concerns of flooding in several areas.

The situation has been exacerbated by heavy rains in the upper catchment regions, particularly in Jharkhand, resulting in the river flowing above its danger mark near Rajghat in Balasore district. This has caused a flood-like scenario in numerous downstream villages, including Bhograi and Baliapal.

Floodwaters have inundated several villages such as Khalbaria, Kulha, Bauskhana, Kudamansingh, Chaudharikud, and Baliapal. Many gram panchayat areas across the Bhograi, Jaleswar, and Baliapal blocks are currently under water, leading to significant damage to standing crops.

Conditions worsened further when the Galudih barrage in Jharkhand released a surplus of water, accumulated from persistent rainfall. The sudden surge has had a detrimental impact on the downstream areas of the Subarnarekha river in Odisha.

In response, district authorities have initiated emergency repairs at Chaudharikud village, where a weakened river embankment poses a risk of severe flooding. Sandbags are being deployed to shore up vulnerable sections and prevent potential breaches.

Relief teams are being mobilized to assist the areas most affected by these floods.”
