Kazakhstan and Russia have finalized an agreement that outlines the timeline for building a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan.

The signing took place at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, with Alexey Likhachev, the director general of Rosatom, and Almasadam Satkaliyev, the chairman of Kazakhstan’s Atomic Energy Agency, in attendance.

Previously, Kazakhstan had chosen Rosatom to lead an international consortium for the construction of this significant project.

In a visit to Kazakhstan last November, Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized the importance of strengthening energy and industrial cooperation, especially as Kazakhstan seeks alternatives for its oil export routes, which primarily pass through Russia.

In October, Kazakhstan’s government voted in favor of its first nuclear power plant, a plan that has President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s support, yet has garnered some criticism from segments of the Kazakh population.
